Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships for International Students

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers scholarships to international students wishing to study at Japanese universities as international students under the Japanese Government Scholarship Program (MEXT) 2019.

Benefits of scholarships / work periods:

The grant includes tuition and other fees and allowances of 117,000 yen per month. An additional monthly grant of 2,000 or 3,000 yen may be provided to those who study or search in specially designated areas and travel costs to and from Japan. The scholarship period will last for five years from April 2018 to March 2023, including a one-year optional preparatory course in Japanese and other materials to be delivered upon arrival in Japan.


(1) Nationality: Applicants must be nationals of a State with diplomatic relations with Japan. An applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of submission is not eligible. However, persons of dual nationality and of Japanese nationality whose place of residence at the time of application outside Japan are eligible to apply as long as they have chosen the nationality of the foreign country and renounced their Japanese nationality by the date of their nationality and have arrived in Japan. The applicant will be examined by the Japanese diplomatic mission in the applicant’s country

(2) Academic Background: Applicants must satisfy one of the following conditions. However, applicants who wish to direct employment must meet any of the following

Applicants who completed 12 years of study in countries other than Japan. Applicants who meet the above qualifications by March 2019. However, applicants who wish to register from the Fall semester through direct placement must complete 12 years of education by August
Applicants who have completed their studies at an equivalent school for a Japanese high school in countries other than Japan. (Applicants who meet the above qualifications by March 2019 are eligible.)
Other than conditions 1 and 2 above, applicants are eligible to join a Japanese university at the time of submission.
(3) Health: Applicants must submit a health certificate in the prescribed form signed by a doctor stating that the applicant has no physical or mental conditions impeding the applicant’s study in Japan.

(4) Access to Japan: In principle, applicants must be able to reach Japan between 1 and 7 April 2019. If the applicant must register at his / her university from the Fall semester through direct placement, you will be able to access To Japan during the period specified by the University of Admissions within two weeks before and after the start date of the university’s relevant semester for that year.
