To study in Canada, you will need a Canadian study permit, which is a Canadian student visa throughout your stay. You do not need a Canadian study permit if the course or program lasts six months or less. However, it may be good to apply for a permit before you come to Canada anyway – otherwise if you decide you want to continue your studies in another program, you will need to leave Canada to apply for a study permit through an office visa. Headquarters. center.
Once you have a Canadian study permit, you can apply for a renewal from within Canada if you decide to continue your studies. For full-time students enrolled in an accredited higher education institution, you are also allowed a study permit to work part time on campus. You may also be able to work outside the campus, work as a collaborator or trainee as part of your program, stay in Canada as a permanent resident or find a job after graduation.
Apply for a Canadian Study Permit
You can apply for a Canadian study permit either online or through a paper application, which can be obtained from the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website. Paper applications usually take about twice as long, and it is always recommended to check processing times in advance. To apply online, you will need a credit / debit card and the ability to create electronic copies of supporting documents (ie using a scanner or camera). Your visa office will provide specific instructions on the documents you need to provide; this can vary depending on your location. If you need help, you can get assistance at the nearest Visa Application Center (VAC).
The process of obtaining a Canadian student visa is as follows:
You must first obtain a standard letter of acceptance from a recognized higher education provider. Students studying in Quebec must apply for an admission certificate, known as CAQ, from the Government of Quebec. You must obtain them before you are allowed to apply for a study permit. You can get this online, by printing a form, or by requesting a paper form from your university, which will also offer advice on the subject.
The next stage is to obtain a Canadian student visa application package, either from the CIC website or by contacting your local visa office, embassy or consulate in your country. You may also need to obtain a temporary residence permit if you are from a particular country (know if you need a permit here), but this will not complicate matters much as it will be processed at the same time as your study requires a permit.
To get your application package, you will need to answer some questions about yourself on the CIC website. These questions will determine whether you are eligible to apply online for a Canadian student permit and what documents you will need to provide.
If you find that you are eligible, you will receive a 60-day personal checklist code that you will need to submit your order online. Make sure that the page containing the code is printed for future reference. The page will also include a guide to the application, the estimated tuition, a list of documents you’ll need to send along with your application, and instructions for your next steps.
When you are ready to apply, create your MyCIC account, where you enter the PIN code. You will then receive a checklist of personal documents that allow you to upload and send your documents to the CIC. You’ll need a printer or scanner to do this.
Once you have completed preparing your documents and application form and paying your fees, you can send your completed application to CIC.
Some applicants may have to attend an interview at the local visa office.
Additional Canadian student visa requirements
Some or all of the following additional Canadian student visa requirements may also apply:
Applicants from Europe, the Middle East or Africa may need to provide biometrics (images and fingerprints).
Some applicants may also require a medical examination and / or police examination before applying. You will not be able to obtain a study permit if you have a criminal record – you may be required to submit a police discharge certificate as evidence.
Unless you are from the United States or Saint Pierre and Miquelon, you will need to prove that you have a valid passport that allows you to return to your country of origin after the completion of the course. Two passport size photographs are also required, with your name and date of birth written on your back.
Canadian student visa requirements also include proof of funds to support yourself. At the moment, this is an amount of C $ 10,000 (approximately US $ 7,650) for each year of your stay (US $ 11,000 / ~ $ 8,400 if you apply for study in Quebec) plus tuition fees. You will also need to make sure that you have enough money to pay transportation costs to return home.
